[NEWS] Area disc golfer blames bad drive on spectator fart
By Bertrand Hyzer
A fun day of disc golf with a friend turned into a nightmare yesterday afternoon when Austin resident Dave Long pulled a drive far out of bounds, causing the veteran player to search for his disc for several minutes after the errant throw.
Making matters worse, officials said Long, who was passing a slower foursome that allowed him and his friend to play through, tried to blame the grip-locked throw on what he claimed was an excessively loud fart as he was in mid backstroke.
The incident occurred at around 2:30 p.m. at the popular Northtown Disc Golf course just north of Austin, said officials who worked the scene.
“It was one of the juiciest farts I’ve ever heard, and it happened right during my approach,” Long said. “I don’t know. I guess I could have stopped and regrouped, but I just didn’t want to disrupt my flow.”
Sources who witnessed the drive on hole 14—a par 4 dog leg left—said they did not hear the fart, but admitted several factors could have been at play, including wind speed and consistent traffic passing by the tee pad.
“I mean, I guess it could have been someone in the foursome we passed [who farted], but I was right by Dave [Long] while he threw, and I didn’t hear it,” said Justin Bustos, Long’s disc golf partner. “So, we’re just going through all the trees and thickets to the right where he pulled the shot, and we’re trying to find the disc, and the whole time I’m thinking, ‘Dude, it’s ok to just admit you fucked up a drive in front of people.’ But, that’s Dave. He starts running with a cockamamie little white lie and it just snowballs from there.”
A source who also plays regularly with Long but wished to remain anonymous said Long very likely made up the rogue fart to save face, corroborating Bustos’ suspicions and further adding to the incident’s mystery.
As of press time, officials said Long had given up looking for the disc, skipped holes 15 and 16 to gain more distance from the foursome that let him pass, and was last seen at hole 18 trying to change the subject.
